On Art Characteristics of Wharton Esherick's Furniture Design

沃顿·埃谢里克是美国手工艺家具设计的典型代表,为美国现代家具的发展做出了卓越的贡献。本文阐述了从工艺美术运动到现代主义设计运动期间,美国现代手工艺家具发展状况,并以此为背景,简要回顾了沃顿·埃谢里克的设计艺术历程,并从艺术学、美学的角度对其家具作品进行详尽分析、归纳,进而总结出极富手工艺个性美、设计手法雕刻化和设计造型有机化等艺术特征。

Wharton Esherick was a typical representative of America crafts furniture design and made outstanding contributions to the development of USA modern furniture. This paper describes the development of American modern craft furniture from the arts and crafts movement to modernism design movement.Basing on such background, it looks back briefl y the process of Wharton Esherick’s design, analysises and induces detailed furniture works in terms of aesthetic and art,then summarizes artistic characteristics, such as personality aesthetics of handicraft, sculpture of design techniques and design modelling organifi cation.
