方言是某一地区民俗文化的载体,它是传统文化赖以留存、传承的媒介。方言反映了当地文化,文化又影响了方言的发展。自18世纪起,勇于闯荡的潮汕先民陆续向海外大量移民,"过番"寻求生计。因此,潮汕地区拥有众多的海外华侨,是全国著名的侨乡。透过潮汕方言,我们可以了解"过番"文化;而"过番"活动也对潮汕地区和侨居国的语言有一定的影响。

And the activity of Guofan （过番） also has some effect on the language of Chaoshan area and country of residence.
