Joan Iverson Nassauer is known for her research and innovations in the field of ecological design. She has melded social science with design innovation and brought design into the science of landscape ecology. She is most well-known for her theory of "cues to care" which emphasizes that "messy ecosystems" need to be framed by clear signs of human intention in order to be sustained by human activities over the long term. Her work is transdisciplinary, depending on collaborators from many disciplines, government agencies, and local residents. She uses statistics and drawing as different important research tools. Brownfields, green infrastructure, vacant land, and watershed design and planning have been important parts of her work. Currently she is working on green infrastructure for vacant land in Detroit, MI; carbon storage potential of suburban landscapes; and new agricultural enterprises and landscape patterns to reduce environmental impacts. Each of these projects will contribute to climate change adaptation or mitigation.
