Historical writing stimulates Adrienne Kennedy, a contemporary African American woman dramatist, to devote herself to theatrical creations. Although non-linear narration, setting with illusions and dreamy dialogues result in her dramas with a strong sense of surrealism, an in-depth analysis asserts that the employment of surrealistic ways is a non-militant strategy taken by this woman playwright. Kennedy's artistic practice illustrates her attitude towards black identity, that is, African Americans., based on the recovery of their historical consciousness, challenge what they are faced up with in a reasonable and targeted way. Finally, the black community can realize their identity pursuit in an environment in which white culture and black culture co-exists harmoniously.
