隋唐五代时期,经济繁荣、文教发达,制笔业作为重要的手工业生产部门更是得到显著发展。笔的制作原料更加多样化,笔毛有十余种,但仍以兔毫为主,笔管有多种,但仍以竹管为主;制作技术不断改进和提高,有多种形制;制作区域愈加广泛,宣州成为著名的制笔中心。消费量的增大反过来又进一步推动了制笔业的发展。
