1906年,章炳麟出狱后东渡日本,在东京留学生欢迎会演讲中声明要做两件大事,其中的一件大事便是"用国粹激动种性,增进爱国的热肠"。他呼吁"用国粹激动种性,增进爱国的热肠",出于救亡与启蒙的双重动机,故而拥有实践与理论的双重维度:作为救亡路线的表达,"用国粹激动种性,增进爱国的热肠"体现了章炳麟迥异于严复、梁启超的致思方向和价值旨趣;作为国学情结的流露,"用国粹激动种性,增进爱国的热肠"将章炳麟与康有为国学观、宗教观的针锋相对表达得淋漓尽致。

Zhang Bing-lin, famous bourgeois revolutionist and scholar in China, announced that he would fulfill two great deeds in his speech presented at the welcome meeting by overseas Chinese students in Tokyo after his discharge from prison in 1906. One of the great deeds, which in fact aimed at national salvation and enlightenment, was ＂to inspire the national nature by the quintessence of Chinese culture and enhance the patriotic pas- sion＂, As for the way of salvation, the above declaration indicates a different ideology and value orientation from those of Yan Fu＇s and Liang Qichao＇s; as for the the quintessence of Chinese culture, Zhang expressed a tit-for-tat argument against Kang You-wei＇s views on Chinese classics and religions.
