Cultural Significance of A-sui in Novel Regret for the Past

鲁迅的小说《伤逝》中阿随貌似一个无关紧要的道具,然而在小说中这只叭儿狗却因其"阿随"的名字,承载了一定的文化意义。阿随在《伤逝》的最后已经成为了涓生这样的新的知识分子永远摆脱不了的两种负累的象征,即经济上的负累和因对家庭、社会反叛所招致的不幸而产生的道德上和情感上的困扰。

A-sui seems to be an insignificant character in LU Xun’s novel Regret for the Past, however, the dog with the name“A-sui”conveys a certaln cultural significance. At the end of this novel, A-sui has become the negative symbol for intellectuals like Juan-sheng, including economic burden, moral and emotional distress incurred by rebellion to the family and society, which they can never escape.
