As her most explicit treatment of women's sexuality in her writing career, Edith Wharton's Summer depicts Charity's rebellion against patriarchal discourse. But her personal story of defiance ends up in plot clich6s: seduction-then-betrayal and regressive movement toward resignation in marriage. Wharton employs a double perspective on Charity's growth and her shrinkage. Under the plot clich6s are Wharton's unique representation of feminine awareness and her reflection on women's unconscious allegiance to the dominant ideology. The compromised ending implies Wharton's consideration over the dilemma of women and her tentative exploration into male-female reconciliation.
