Most of the works by Ian McEwen, arguably the most prolific and popular of contemporary British novelists, have undergone critical scrutiny from various perspectives. Curiously enough, Amsterdam, the novel that won him a Booker prize in 1998, has received little critical attention. This article attempts to address this inadequacy in McEwen studies by exploring two major narrative strategies in Amsterdam, intertextuality and irony, to shed light on the meaning of the novel.
