In response to practice in engineering education and the concept of service learning, Pur- due University created, and is currently the headquarters of, the Engineering Project In Community Service (EPICS), which has been extended to 21 other engineering colleges and universities. EPICS has six major characteristics: close collaboration with community partners, large-scale and vertically inte- grated team, students' long-term participation, flexible credit system, multi-disciplinary team, and de- sign experience from beginning to end. The project places a premium on real situation and long-term participation, which deeply affect students' experiences. The review of EPICS in this paper is conduc- tive to creating a new model of engineering practice and reforming engineering education curricula in China.
