Extra-Contextual Adaptation of Translating Figures of Speech in Chapter Titles in Hong Lou Meng

运用维索尔伦的语用顺应理论,研究了《红楼梦》两种译本中回目辞格的英译版本,对翻译的本质及其现象作了探讨,研究回目辞格的外部语境顺应。译者怎么译是结合多种社会、文化、认知因素的双向选择机制。动态顺应、意识程度这两个变量是影响翻译选择的重要因素。应用Jef Verschueren的顺应理论,可以很清晰地看清翻译活动的全部过程,为翻译研究拓展了空间。

Based on Verschueren＇s theory of pragmatic adaptation, this paper examines the phenomenon and nature of transla- ting figure of speech used in chapter titles in the two English versions of Hong Lou Meng. And its extra-contextual adaptation is also explored. Translation is, by nature, a dual-optional mechanism involving social, cultural and cognitive factors. Moreo- ver, dynamic adaptation and degrees of salience are the two major factors that impact translators＇ choices. Verschueren＇s ad- aptation theory serves as an appropriate tool to help understand the whole translation process and expand the boundaries of the field.
