On Borrowed Senses of Chinese Words

汉语固有词语从中古就开始从梵语吸收佛教意义,到近现代从英语、日语等外语中吸收新的义项,这表明汉外语言接触中,除了不断吸收外来词,汉语的一些固有词语也在吸收对应的外语词的义项,从而使汉语词语增添了新的义项,丰富了汉语的词义系统。

The existing Chinese words borrowed Buddhism senses from Sanskrit in ancient time.They have also borrowed new senses from such foreign languages as English and Japanese in modern times. This shows that,in the long course of contact with other languages,the Chinese language,apart from absorbing foreign words directly,has also borrowed new senses for its existing words,which have enriched the semantic system of the Chinese language.
