该论文运用修辞学、社会学、语言学等学科理论详细论述了社会运动修辞批评的理论基础,挖掘了其中蕴含的哲学假定,并勾勒出社会运动修辞批评的操作方法。在此基础上,该文认为社会运动是一种象征行为,其目的是劝说社会机构改变现状。作为修辞者,社会运动参与者常常根据当下的修辞情景,采取多种"话语"策略,对听众(社会机构)施加影响。社会运动修辞批评分为宏观和微观两个层面以及语言及非语言符号两个基本维度。

By using,among other things,rhetorical,social,and linguistic theories,this paper makes a detailed study of the theories undergirding social movement rhetorical criticism,uncovers its the philosophical assumptions,and sketches the method for its application. It is pointed out that a social movement,as a symbolic action,intends to persuade some relevant social institution to change the status quo,and that,as a rhetor,social movement participants often employ,according to the current rhetorical situation,various kinds of ＂discursive＂strategies to influence the audience（ namely,social institution）. Social movement rhetorical criticism has a macro as well as micro aspect,and a linguistic as well as nonlinguistic dimension.
