A Study on Philip's Mental Processes in Where Angels Fear to Tread from the Personality Structure Theory

《天使不敢涉足的地方》是爱德华·摩根·福斯特的第一部小说。小说以英国寡妇莉莉娅与意大利小伙吉诺的爱情故事为线索展开情节。在此过程中,作为主人公之一的菲利普在两种文化的交锋中,开始了一段心路历程,人格结构在不同的阶段也产生了动态的变化,经历了从压抑本我、盲目偏执的超我到完善自我的转变的过程,最终实现了人格结构的完善。菲利普人格结构完善的心路历程的背后,也是福斯特本人对当时英国文化价值观念的反思,及对意大利开放文化的吸收借鉴。

As Edward Morgan Forster＇ s first novel, Where Angels Fear to Tread develops its plot accord- ing to the clue of the love story between British widow, Lilia and an Italian young man, Gino. During this pro- cess, Philip, one of the protagonists, began a mental process in confrontation with two different cultures. What ＇ s more, his personality structure also had a dynamic change in different stages, during which he underwent a transformation process from the repression of id, the blind obsession of superego to the self-improved ego and ultimately realized the perfection of his personality structure. In fact, Philip ＇ s mental processes of the perfec- tion of his personality structure are also Forster＇ s reflection on British culture and values at that time and his absorption of the cultural values of Italy.
