摘要
斯珀津开创了20世纪莎士比亚评论中的意象批评,对莎士比亚研究影响巨大。她不仅详细梳理了莎士比亚戏剧中的意象,而且还指出这些意象有两大功能:第一个功能是体现作者的情感和兴趣,甚至作者的生活经历;第二个功能是为戏剧提供背景、传达剧作的氛围和情感。前者由莎士比亚戏剧中的一般意象来承担,后者则由每一部剧作中的主导意象来完成。斯珀津对意象的第二个功能的研究影响深远。不过,由于研究方法和自身观念的局限性,斯珀津的结论也往往流于肤浅。
Caroline Spurgeon initiated the imagery criticism which was extremely influential in the 20th century Shakespeare study .She not only sorted out the images in Shakespeare's plays,but also pointed out the two main functions of the imagery .First,the general ima-ges of Shakespeare served to expose the author's interest and experience;second,the recurrent images of each play served as a back-ground.The later study was more influential in the history of Shakespearean criticism .However,though itself a great success ,there are still disadvantages in Spurgeon's conclusion .
