British contemporary novelist Caryl Phillips delineates in his historical novels a multidimensional and multilevel picture of the slave trade, the Holocaust and the post-war Caribbean immigration. Different from the western mainstream writers, Phillips focuses on the traumatic history of the marginalized group. He subverts the stereotyped characterization of the black by Anglo-Saxon writers, exposes the unspeakable trauma of the Holocaust and breaks the patriarchal conception of female image. Phillips places the experiences of the marginalized group in the narrative center to give voices to the silenced other to write down their own stories in the history.
