淫羊藿炮制起源于南北朝,先后经历宋、元、明、清直至现代,炮制方式以羊脂油炙、蜜炙、酒炙、盐炙、炒为主,羊脂炙记载最多;不同文献对炮制后化学成分及功效观点不同,羊脂油炙是学者公认的炮制方式,可有效提高药效,并一直沿用至今,得到广泛认可。
