The first part of the essay critically re-assesses the influential scholarship on Chinese socialist revolution and women's eman- cipation produced in early and mid 1980s American academia, revealing its historical and political roots in the Cold War ideology and the liberal/radical feminism. Through a close analysis of Judith Stacey's Patriarchy and Socialist Revolution in China, the essay interro- gates the Western centered and pro-capitalist feminist conclusion that Chinese socialist revolution is essentially patriarchal and sex/gen- der system as well as feminist practice should be autonomous. The second part locates Chinese socialist feminism in its anti-imperialist, anti-feudalist, and anti-capitalist context, re-constructing it as a mainstream, institutionalized, integrated, and multifaceted practice in the socialist revolution (1921-1949 and beyond). The goal of this essay is to critically revise the dominant discourse on Third World socialist feminism and provide an alternative approach to transnational feminism and culture in history.
