Historical Epistemology and Philosophy of Scientific Practice

Philosophy of scientific practice needs a new kind of epistemology to ground local scientific knowledge. However, many studies on local knowledge in the history of science and in science studies are incapable of fulfilling this epistemological task. Based on a notion of practice, Wartofsky＇s historical epistemology provides a good starting point for the development of this new epistemology. Though his theory confronts some difficulties, the achievements of contemporary cognitive science and the philosophy of science centered on practice are rich in resource to solve them.
