The Yi jing (Book of Changes) is one of the earliest Chinese classics introduced into the West, and has been trans- lated into English frequently in the last one hundred years. There are great differences in different versions; however, over the long term, studies on its translation mostly have centered on the James Legge and Wilhelm/Baynes versions. According to a descriptive approach based on poly-system theory, this paper provides a comprehensive account of the translations of the Yi jing into English, a history that covers a course of more than 140 years. This paper points out the translation of the Yi jlng was influenced by the shifts in the relative position of Chinese and Anglo-American culture, and the position and social role of the English version of the Yi jing vary in the Anglo-American cultural poly-system in different historical periods
