An Analysis on English Puns from the Perspective of Relevance Theory

关联理论认为交际是一个明示推理的过程,在此过程中听话者对说话者的意图进行识别认知。而双关语是人们间接表达自己思想时常采用的一种方式。文章从关联理论视角对英语双关语进行了分析,从而推断理解说话者的实际交际意图,以正确解读双关语的含义。

Relevance Theory suggests that communication is a process of ostensive -inference ,a cognitive process for the audience to identify the communicator’s intent .And puns are a common way employed by people to express their ideas indirectly .This paper tries to analyze puns on the basis of Rel‐evance Theory ,so as to understand the real communicative intent of the communicator .
