Frank Chin in his postmodern novel Donald Duk artistically transplants the Confucian concept of the mandate of heaven, and uses it as a pure ethical principle for his creation of Donald Duk, a Chinese A-merican cultural hero of revenge. In light of Said’ s traveling theory, this paper analyzes in what manner the Confucian concept of the mandate of heaven travels with the Chinese classics in the historical context of Ameri-can Orientalism, and how Chin reinterprets the mandate as the ethical code of private revenge so as to recon-struct the ideal cultural identity and image for Chinese Americans.
