中国文化海外传播:问题与反思——以《师傅越来越幽默》葛浩文英译本为范例

Overseas Transmission of Chinese Culture——A Case Study of Howard Goldblatt Translating Mo Yan's Shifu,You'll Do Anything for a Laugh

2012年,莫言借由葛浩文等翻译家的辛勤工作走上诺贝尔文学奖殿堂,大大缓解了中国人的"诺奖饥渴"情绪。但是,中国文化走向世界的瓶颈犹存。文章以莫言中篇小说《师傅越来越幽默》英译为切入点,重点研究了中国文化海外传播中尚存的问题。葛浩文译笔精湛,他的翻译在很大程度上推动了中国文化的海外有效传播,但由于翻译深受意识形态,诗学及赞助人因素的操纵,中国文学走向世界的瓶颈仍不容忽视。通过对操纵理论的学习和对葛浩文翻译的探析,发现中国文化海外传播中现存的问题,并倡导采用积极战略进一步推动中国文化在海外的有效传递。

In 2012,Mo Yan’s success is of certa i n help to ease the Chinese anxiety about the Nobel Prize breakthrough,while we should never ignore the ever-existing bottlleneck in the overseas transmission of Chinese culture. Focusing on Goldblatt’s translation work Shifu,You’ll Do Anything for a Laugh,this paper mainly studies the problems in the process of overseas transmission. Howard Goldblatt’s English version has opened a global window on the modern Chinese literature. However,with the manipulation of ideology,poetics and patronage on translation,Chinese literature still has a long way to go before it can be better recognized and appreciated by the world. Through the study of Howard Goldblatt’s translation practice and the manipulation theory,this paper finds the problems in the process of C-E translation. Faced with this situation,positive strategies should be adopted to further promote the effective delivery of Chinese culture to the whole world.
