陈去病为南社第一任社长,历史当事人高旭、柳亚子、庞树柏等均称陈为南社主盟、盟长、总社长。南社核心人物按"陈高柳"顺序排序,南社通讯录中陈去病居首。谁是南社第一人,历史自身已经定位。陈去病首创南社,南社创立后,他拓展并力图提升南社事业,化解南社内部的矛盾和危机,延续南社脉流,至南社衰败时,仍力图接续南社前缘。南社与陈去病的名字紧紧连接在一起。当然,柳亚子对南社事业也做出了巨大的贡献。
