The increasing number of mediaeval foreign objects unearthed within Chinese territory in the past century provides Chinese scholars with new materials to study Sino-foreign cultural exchanges and diffusion from a different perspective, to trace the history of ancient civilization communication between China and the outside world. The coverage of the foreign objects —— from the Greco-Romanfeathered man with wings to the man-head-and-horse-body figure and Demeter, from the branchshaped candle over the head of a teenager to a great amount of the East Roman gold coins, from the duck-mouth glass bottle with roses and three swallows to the Greek ‘Rhyton’, from the Nestorian Cross to Greek line-carved picture showing the hero drawing deity animal to protect Queen, fills in a gap which has hitherto existed in Sino- Euro cultural exchanges during the medieval ages and makes up for the lack of the archives recording Sino-western communication, which greatly promote the study of the world civilization.
