Alice Munro' s short story Runaway narrates a woman named Karla who escaped from home, but returned in halfway. Simultaneously her pet goat Flora had nearly the same experience as Karla, first disappeared and then mysteriously returned. The thesis aims to explore the relationship between Karla and Flora from the perspective of metaphor theory. Through tracing the journey of Karla and Flora, and analyzing the origination and construction of the metaphor, it reaches the conclusion that Karla is embodied by Flora. The decoding of metaphor exemplifies the high writing techniques of Alice Munro.
