Another Look at the Reshaping for Li Yi in the Story of Purple Hairpin

汤显祖以唐传奇《霍小玉传》为蓝本创作了《紫钗记》,并对男主人公李益的形象进行了改写。对于重塑后的李益形象,有人批评其性格过于被动软弱,甚至苟且忍让,算不上"至情"。这种说法并不准确,事实上李益是一位能屈能伸、重情重义的至情君子。他性格中的"软弱、拖延、苟且",是当时社会强权政治压迫下的产物。看似矛盾,实则合理。李益形象实质上是汤显祖的自我投射。

Tang Xianzu created the story of Purple Hairpin based on the Biography of Huo Xiaoyu, and re- wrote the image of Li Yi. For the remodeling image of Li Yi, some scholars have criticized his character for be- ing too passively weak, even struggling patient, and could not be considered ＂most emotional＂. This assertion is not accurate. In fact, Li Yi was a gentleman who was resilient and heavy duty. The weak, procrastination and carelessness of Li Yi＇ s character is a product of social power and politics. Seemingly contradictory, but in fact reasonable, this is precisely Tang Xianzu＇ s helpless complaint about the ups and downs, depression, frustration of his career.
