T. S. Eliot has famously written two articles in which he blasted away at John Milton as well as his works. Consequently,Milton′s classical status suffered from subversion for several decades from the 1930s to the 1960s. An originator of the New Criticism School as he is,Eliot himself is effectively subjective towards Milton and his poems. Literary canons undoubtedly have certain inherent characteristics, but still more they are over - deter-mined historically by ideology and cultural power. The case of Eliot′s criticism against Milton and the corresponding refutation allows us to look at the subjectivity as well as the historicalness that criticism presents in literary canoniza-tion.
