Basic Characteristics of the Development and Changes of Bronze Hu Vessels

青铜壶从商代早期出现至战国晚期经历了1200多年,在商周青铜器中占有非常重要的地位。本文收集整理1178件商周时期的青铜壶进行了分类分期研究,总结器形演变规律,研究发现青铜壶的发展可分成三个阶段,其间出现了两次器形更替和三个高峰。

Emerging from the Early Shang dynasty, bronze hu vessels were used for more than 1,200 years until the Late Warring States period. Given the fact that its history is almost as long as the most important vessel-d/ng tripods, this types of vessels occupies an essential position in the study of Shang and Zhou bronzes. A comprehensive analysis of bronze hu vessels of the Shang and Zhou dynasties, nonetheless, has been significantly underexplored. Many key issues related to this type of bronzes are still poorly understood.The author conducts classification and typological analyses of this type of vessel and presents the results here based upon a dataset including 1,178 pieces of bronzehu vessels. The author summaries the gen- eral pattems of changes in the morphology. Most importantly, this article identifies that its overall development represents three major stages, including two major shift in the design of the shape and three peaks in this development.
