湖湘学者对音韵学的探讨起源于宋代,南宋王观国的《学林》体现了湖南学者的音韵学造诣;明代桑绍良和袁子让的等韵学研究则把湖南的音韵学推向了一个小高峰;清代至近代的湖南更是人才辈出、硕果累累,邹汉勋、曾运乾、杨树达等人的音韵学成果为学界所公认,湖南的音韵学发展走向了巅峰。
