The Orphan of Asia is a long novel by the Taiwan writer Wu Zhouliu. It reveals the situation of Taiwan under the Japanese colonial rule, and shows the protagonist Hu Taiming's consciousness of orphans. This lonely, confusing orphan consciousness is the manifestation of self-identity crisis. It is a kind of internal reflection generated when self-identity is not acknowledged, and it becomes explicit only through a series of external performances, which mainly takes the form of others' disapproval in many aspects and contradictory personalized identification. Hu Taiming' s external performance as an orphan reflects the causes of the crisis of self-identity, including the external influences of colonial culture and western culture, and the internal restraint of Chinese traditional culture.
