English Name Translation in the Context of Cultural Consciousness & Confidence

本文旨在探究文化平等在英汉专有名词翻译乃至翻译中的背景作用。作者认为:中英姓名由不同的文化元素按不同的文化排序构成,彼此承载了不同的文化内涵,其翻译存在着因文化差异和不平等而起的翻译冲突;文章建议:姓名翻译应建立在文化自觉与自信基础上,尊同原国文化,体现原国姓名的发音和排序,并进行符合译国文化的姓名方式处理。

The paper is to explore the background role of cultural equality in proper name translation and even all the language translation. The authors think that names both in China and western countries are composed by different culture elements according to different sort of culture, and carry different culture connotation of each other. Their translations exist conflict of the culture differences and inequality. The paper suggests that name translation should be based on the cultural consciousness and confidence, respect the original culture, reflect the pronunciation and sorting of original name, and at last, handle the names with a style of fitting the translating country culture.
