In Notre Dame de Paris Hugo, by comparing beauty with ugliness of the three major characters Esmeirada, Garrod and Casey Modoo , highlights his humanitarian ideals, and also makes the novel full of romantic color. This paper starts with the beauty and ugliness of the three major characters, and mainly analyzes the contrast of beauty and ugliness among the three characters, meanwhile points out the advancement and limitation of Hugo＇s humanitarianism.
