On XU Yuanchong's C-E Translation Strategies of Classical Chinese Poetry from Bassnett's Culture Translation Theory

The classical Chinese poetry boasts of its implicit language and significant implication, which is inseparable from its pro- found cultural artistry. As a top-notch expert in the C-E translation of Chinese poetry, Professor XU Yuanchong attaches much impor- tance to conveying the cultural connotation of the original poems to the TL readers. Taking Bassnett＇ s Culture Translation Theory as the research perspective, the paper attempts to make a detailed analysis of XU＇ s strategies used in his C-E translation of classical Chinese poetry through combining some examples from the aspects of amplification, explanation, simplification, and accommodation, which aims to indicate that the translators should never be subject to the form of source text in their translation, instead, they are supposed to regard the cuhural indication of the source text as the translation unit, and then use as many translation techniques as possible on the condition of displaying their subjectivity so as to achieve functional equivalence of SL culture to the TL culture, and thereby to realize the aim of communication between Chinese and western culture.
