Preposition duizhe(对着), germinating in South Song Dynasty and forming in Yuan Dynasty, derived from the preposition dui plus a suffix zhe. Originally an allomorph of the monosyllabic preposition dui, it later evolved into a specialized preposition for directions by the end of Qing Dynasty. Zhe was added to dui out of prosodic needs, and the formation of direction preposition duizhe was a consequence of the functional specialization of preposition dui. In modern Chinese, dui and duizhe are prepositions of different types, dui is a primary preposition, while duizhe is a secondary preposition. Register is a significant factor in the evolution of dui〉duizhe.
