８世纪末之后，德意志人自认为不同于其他日耳曼人，从而形成德意志语族。德意志语族形成和发展的过程是德意志人自我意识增长的过程。１５世纪以后，德意志民族没有实现民族国家的原因在于其民族自我意识仍然停留在中世纪。

Following the end of 8th century,the Deutsche were distinguished themselves from other German groups in consciousness.The formation and development of German language family is identical with the process of German consciousness.After 15th century,the German State did not come into being because the consciousness of German was still in the Middle Ages.
