古希腊-罗马文化同古希伯来-基督教文化是西方文学创作的两大源头。在古希伯来-基督教文化中,《嘉莉妹妹》中嘉莉的形象是会受到批判的。该小说自出版以来,嘉利它一直是颇有争议的人物形象。本文借助古希腊神话中的形象,从古希腊-罗马传统文化的角度出发,阐释了嘉莉形象的合理性,并分析了造成她强烈欲望形成的原因,指出嘉莉人生追求的局限性。

Ancient Greek and Rome culture and the ancient Hebraic and Christian culture are the two sources for the western literature. In the ancient Hebraic and Christian culture,Carrie,in the Sister Carrie of Dreiser,is an enchantress,who should be severely criticized. Since the novel＇s publication,the image of Carrie is controversial. By the aid of the myth in Greece and Rome,this paper is to illustrate the rationality of Carrie＇s image from the perspective of ancient Greek and Rome culture,then to analyze the reasons for her strong desires in material things,and finally to show the limitations in her search for meaning.
