Brief account of the People of Yan during the Five Dynasties

唐末五代的战争与动乱,为各路群雄的崛起创造了契机,同时也为各方面的人才施展抱负、才艺提供了舞台。其中,许多燕人或以其勇悍善战,累积军功而成为大将;或以其杰出文才,协助军阀开创霸业,成为重要谋臣。这些燕人在御敌防边及平定内乱中多有显赫功勋;在治理地方上有卓越政绩;他们清直为人,不阿权贵;不少燕人还以其文才武功或高尚品格扬名于异国他乡。五代时期的燕人群体在历史舞台上扮演了重要角色,发挥了积极作用。

The war and turmoil of the Five Dynasties offered the opportunity for various rivaling warlords, in themeantime, set the stage for gifted people to realize their aspirations and show their talent. Among them, many peo-ple of Yan either became generals for their bravery and military skills or became important counselors by assistingthe warlords. These people of Yan contributed prominent meritorious service in defending the enemy＇s attack andguardingthe frontier, and in suppressing civil wars. They also made outstanding achievements in local governing.They were straight and honest and never bowed to the bigwigs. Many of them were even well-known in foreign landsfor their accomplishments and nobility. They had played a positive and important role on the stage of history.
