Polyamines are believed to be the pivotal molecules for cell survival, and evidences showed that polyamines are directly and indirectly involved in the regulation of programmed cell death. Direct roles of polyamines in programmed cell death include their involvement in particular biological processes, as well as their interaction with molecules or structures which are involved in programmed cell death. The indirect roles of polyamines in regulating programmed cell death are associated with their metabolic derivatives, such as catabolic and inter-conversion products. In addition, cytotoxic products of polyamines metabolism are also involved in programmed cell death cascades. Recent progresses of polyamines-dependent programmed cell death in animals and plants are reviewed.
