The novel 1984 metaphorically presents a nightmarish picture of totalitarian rule. Against the postmodern turnings of space and linguistics, this essay interprets the secrets of totalitarian rule in light of Foucault' s theory of power/discourse combined with his views on body, space and gaze, and thus reveals the inevitable "death of subject". Hence an insight into Orwell' s dystopian attitude and an approach out of the predicament is duly gained.
