In The Joy Luck Club written by Amy Tan, there are numerous Chinese symbols. Among them, "Gold" is the one closely related to the life experience of mother Lindo Jong. "Gold", in Chinese tradition, can be under- stood as one of the five elements (wood, fire, earth, metal, water) or a kind of precious metal. Approaching from these two aspects, this paper analyzes the personality and fate transformation of Lindo Jong. Lindo Jong has to be subordinated to Mrs. Hong because of her lack of "Gold" in the five elements and her low economic status. But the balance of five elements and her gaining of wealth later give her economic independence and self-esteem. Lin- do Jong's solid faith in traditional Chinese culture guides her out of her deprived condition to a life of security and fulfillment.
