摘要
《面纱》是毛姆以中国为背景创作的一部小说,因其异域形象在中国备受关注。小说中的"中国形象"徘徊于意识形态和乌托邦之间,一方面是丑陋的、低劣的;另一方面,又是神秘的、理想化的。这一"中国形象",远非真实的中国,而是想象的"他者"。它是毛姆对中国的文学想象和文化利用,传达出毛姆作为英国人的文化心理和深层需要。
The Painted Veil is a novel of W. S. Maugham, which based on Chinese background. Because of the exotic image, it attracts considerable attention in China. Chinese image in the Novel is wandering between ideology and Utopia. On the one hand, it was ugly and inferior~ on the other hand, it was mysterious and idealized. This "Chinese image", Far from the real China, but as the imaginary "the other". It was Maugham , Literary imagination and cultural utilization of Chinese. It conveys Maugham as British' Cultural psychology and deep need.
