《申报》自1875年左宗棠收复新疆至左宗棠离开新疆,在7年的收复新疆报道中,与左宗棠相关的边疆危机、收复新疆、开发西北等一系列重大事件均有所涉及。尤其在收复新疆过程中因贷银西征、两次塞防与海防之争等事件的报道,《申报》可以说是同时期报道时间最长、最全面的媒体。
