Few writers give due attention to pain itself in their literary creation; Philip Roth' s novel The Anatomy Lesson is one of the rare novels that dwell and elaborate on pain as the central topic. The present paper tries to analyze the concern about and description of pain, the diagnosis and treatment of pain, and metaphorical interpretation of pain in this unique novel. In essence, this novel is centered around the dialectical relationships between self and pain. At a deeper level, this work tries to probe into the root and abyss of pain, revealing that the writer' s pain is derived from none other than his own reflection and literary creation of pain itself. As Roth' s alter ego and doppelganger, Zuckerman embodies Roth' s aesthetical consideration about the paradoxi- cal relations between self and pain.
