A good piece of translation should be one that reproduces the individualities of the characters. Moss Roberts＇ Three Kingdoms is universally recognized as an excellent version of the Chinese classical novel. Its success lies in that the translator had a good understanding of the source text as well as what is expressed between the lines on the one hand, and as a native speaker, his expertise in the use of the English language and rhetorical devices, along with his skilled employment of translation strategies, enabled him to reproduce the tone and mien of the characters in the novel on the other.
