Xiapu, a coastal township in Beilun District, has a long history, dating back to the Song Dynasty. In the past hundreds of years, people living there have built several seawalls to guard against the typhoon and develop agriculture. Since new China was founded, Xiapu's local economic development has entered into a new stage. In particular, since the reform and open-door policy implemented in the late 1970 s, Xiapu has started to develop township and village enterprises, focusing on industries like children's garments and machinery. Furthermore, owing to its port resource, Xiapu has been committed to developing port and related heavy industries, including steel industry, automobile industry and so forth. Xiapu is believed to have a bright future in this new century.
