When Bulgakov＇ s The Master and Margaret was introduced to China, it did not draw attention from Chinese avant-garde writers until the avant-garde narrative shift was ready to take place in the 1990s, when the former came to be an important influential source for the latter. Serving as a manual for practice, The Master and Margaret brought Chinese avant-garde writers to the reality, showing them how to engage reality with narra- tion.
