Is Angry or Helpless?—On Alan Sillitoe's Short Stories Garbage Collector's Daughter and The Fishing Boat Picture

In the 1950s and 1960s, a number of writers known as “the angry young men” had appeared in English literature cir-cle. Alan Sillitoe is one of their representatives. In his short stories Garbage Collector’ s Daughter and The Fishing Boat Picture, characters are either indifferent or decadent. This is a kind of revolt without political significance, and a state of confusion and un-certainty of the lost generation.
