The aphorism ＂never work with children or animals＂ is credited to W C Fields, a comedian, though I suspect he may also have worked in clinical research. As a paediatric researcher I am, fortunately, able to avoid working with animals （the occasional troublesome teddy bear aside） but obliged to put the success of my research in the hands of our friends under the age of 16.
