Two representatives of the declining aristocracy,Kazuko and Naoji, took different attitudes towards life in the wake of the post-war social reforms. They fell seemingly into a fresh new life and darkness respectively, but what they faced was the rebel beyond life and death. Kazuko and Naoji in The Setting Sun by Osamu Dazai were the representation of the young generation that was ambivalent about desiring for ideal society and shaking off the shackles of old systems and ideology.
